Helping Families and Friends Honor Loved Ones Since 1959

Michael L. Hamilton

Michael L. Hamilton, lifelong resident of Pleasant Hill, Missouri and former Pleasant Hill business owner, was born December 19, 1954, in Kansas City, Missouri and departed this life in a tragic and unforeseen accident on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at the Pleasant Hill City Lake, Pleasant Hill, Missouri, at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 1 day.

He was the son of Albert and Okemah Hamilton.

Mike grew up in Pleasant Hill, graduating from Pleasant Hill High School in 1973. After graduation, he embarked on his lifelong career as a third-generation florist. He first worked for his grandparents, Lavale and Blanch Ferguson, at the Ferguson Greenhouse in Pleasant Hill for two years before moving to California to work in several commercial greenhouses. Two years later, Mike moved back to the Pleasant Hill area, and eventually started his own business.

On December 25, 1979, Mike was united in marriage with Robyn Hoff. After their marriage they lived in Raymore, Missouri for about a year where they owned and operated The Robyn’s Nest flower shop. A year later, Mike and Robyn returned to Pleasant Hill to make their home, and Mike took over as manager of the Ferguson Greenhouse and Floral business that his grandparents still owned. In 1986, Mike and Robyn opened Flowers and Friends floral shop in Pleasant Hill, which they owned and operated until they retired in December of 2020.

Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was “Everybody’s Best Friend” and felt like family to so many.

Mike loved his family and looked forward to any type of family gathering. He was always a favorite among his nieces and nephews and available to them anytime they needed him, as he was for all his family.

Mayor John King, of Pleasant Hill said it best in a statement he released to the Pleasant Hill Times, in which he said, “Yesterday, I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of a man’s life at the City Lake. I join with all the residents of Pleasant Hill in expressing our profound sense of loss and our sincere sympathy to Michael Hamilton’s family. The loss of life affects so many within a family-oriented community like Pleasant Hill, but I know people of Pleasant Hill will be there to support the family and one another in this time of grief.”

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Okemah Hamilton and one sister, Arbetta Ray.

He is survived by his wife, Robyn Hamilton of the home; siblings, Joe Hamilton of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Pat Hamilton and wife Carla of Raytown, Missouri, Janell Hamilton, and Candia Dorman both of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Tonya Richardson and husband Dana of Kennard, Texas and Daymon Smallwood of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; 7 Nephews, 6 Nieces, 14 Great-Nephews, 7 Great-Nieces 5 Great Great-Nephews and 5 Great Great-Nieces, other relatives and a host of friends.

Robyn & family, we are heartbroken to hear of Mike’s tragic passing. He didn’t know a stranger & always made time to visit, every time we saw him. I used to laugh when he would say Robyn talks a lot, when he could talk the legs off a table. We as a Community are mourning this loss & praying you find comfort in all the wonderful memories he left you with. Much love & many prayers

Dear Robyn, Our deepest sympathy to you. We all loved Mike. Pleasant Hill has lost one of its finest. He will be greatly missed. He was a pall bearer for Beth, after our tragic loss of her. They had been buddies since she was a child. Flowers and Friends had sent her “flowers” her entire life. I’m sure they are sharing stories now. Our thoughts and prayers for you, and your family.
