Larry Lee “Sonny” Allen was born September 15, 1933 in Sugar Creek, Missouri and departed this life on September 22, 2015 at his home in Pleasant Hill surrounded by the love of his family, at the age of 82 years and 7 days. He was the son of Robert S. and Virgie (Pennington) Allen.
Sonny spent his younger years in Sugar Creek and graduated from Northeast High School in 1951. On December 3, 1952, he was united in marriage with Dixie Lee (Andes) Allen in Harrison, Arkansas, and they made their home in Sugar Creek for 3 1/2 years before moving to Independence, MO, where they remained until 1977 when they moved to Pleasant Hill, MO.
Sonny had worked as a heavy equipment operator for both Robert Allen Construction and Raymond Allen Construction. He also owned and operated his own farm. He was baptized in the Pleasant Hill Community of Christ Church.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Robert S. and Virgie Allen; one brother, Robert W. Allen and two sisters, Loretta Norman and Betty Hughes and one daughter-in-law, Sharon (Brenner) Allen.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dixie Lee Allen of the home; five sons, Larry Lee Allen, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Indiana, Ross Richard Allen of Missouri, Todd Raymond Allen and wife Kathy of Kansas, Bradley Thomas Allen and wife Marsha of Colorado and Gregory Patrick Allen of Missouri; two daughters, Cynthia Lynn (Allen) Postnikoff of Missouri and Carolyn Sue “Teri” (Allen) Comer and husband David Bossemeyer of Kansas; one brother, Raymond Allen of Missouri; three sisters, Lorene V. Lass, Joy Eaton and Margie Rucker all of Missouri; nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, other relatives and many, many friends.
Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service honoring Sonny’s life will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Community of Christ Church, 1007 Timber Street, Pleasant Hill, MO, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., one hour prior to service time. Elder Rolland Hughes will officiate.
