John P. Bonk was born May 26, 1931 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and departed this life on June 9, 2016 at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Center in Jefferson City, Missouri at the age of 85 years and 14 days. He was the son of Andrew and Mary Elisabeth (Pazicini) Bonk.
Mr. Bonk spent his younger years in Pennsylvania, graduating from Union Vocational High School in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. After graduation, Mr. Bonk enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country.
On May 17, 1958, Mr. Bonk was united in marriage with Betty May Shapley in Orange, California. The Bonk family lived in California until 1996 when they moved to Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and in 1999, they moved to Pleasant Hill, Missouri to make their home. Mrs. Betty Bonk passed away December 16, 2013 and Mr. Bonk continued to live in Pleasant Hill until about 18 months ago when he moved to Jefferson City to be close to family.
Mr. Bonk was a self-employed mechanic for most of his life. He was a member of St. Matthew Apostle Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his wife Betty, Mr. Bonk was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary Bonk; one son, John F. Bonk, Jr. and four sisters, Bertha, Virginia, Kay and Wilma.
He is survived by one son, Paul Winston Bonk and wife Jen of Laguna Niguel, California; one daughter, Peggy Lynne Bonk of Jefferson City, Missouri; one step-son, Kenneth Victor Shapley of Westminister, California; three step-daughters, Balencia Maria Erskine of Tennessee, Maria Luz West and husband Dale of Junction City, Oregon and Denia Loris Fields and husband Gene of Jefferson City, Missouri; one brother, William Bonk of Los Angeles, California; thirteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
Graveside Service and Interment for Mr. John P. Bonk will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at Swan Lake Memorial Park, Grain Valley, Missouri with Mr. Joel Fields officiating.
