BILLY EDWARD “Bill” SLEVIN
Bill Slevin was born March 7, 1944 in Edinburgh, Indiana and departed this life on January 20, 2023 at Lee’s Summit Medical Center in Lee’s Summit, Missouri at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 13 days.
He was the son of Howard Estel Slevin, Sr. and Hazel Marie (Cottrill) Slevin.
Bill spent his younger years in Martinsburg, West Virginia where he attended school. On March 14, 1961, at the age of 17, Bill enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country. After his honorable discharge, he returned to his home in Martinsburg, West Virginia where he lived until 1964 when he and his father, Howard moved to Pleasant Hill, Missouri after accepting positions with the Pleasant Hill Veneer Plant.
On January 23, 1965, Bill was united in marriage with Linda Lou Lowry at the Pleasant Hill Assembly of God Church. Bill and Linda lived the entire 58 years of their married life in Pleasant Hill.
Bill worked in several grocery stores throughout his working career, retiring in October of 2013 from Price Chopper in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a member of Retail Clerks Union Local #782 of Kansas City, Missouri.
Bill was a dedicated and active member of the Open Door Full Gospel Church of Pleasant Hill, where he was a Sunday school teacher, song leader, board member and, for many years, was the pitcher for the church’s co-ed softball team. Bill worked tirelessly for his church, volunteering for anything that needed to be done. He had a very special relationship with God and credited the Lord for his survival, as a child, of being hit by a car and later surviving cancer, two open heart surgeries and COPD. Bill also volunteered at the local food pantry.
Bill’s life revolved around his family. He was a proud, loving, supportive and hardworking husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Bill was active in his daughter’s life, even coaching her little league baseball team for many years. Bill taught by example, living a life full of love, kindness, compassion and humility, and instilled these fine qualities in his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandson.
Bill enjoyed bowling and bowled on two different leagues at Summit Lanes in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where he once bowled a 298 game, and was a member of the Greater Kansas City, Missouri USBC. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes, evening car rides where he would look for deer, sitting on his front porch, collecting model cars and especially playing “trucks” with great-grandson, Tripp.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Howard E. SLevin, Sr. and Hazel Marie Slevin and three brothers, Howard Estel Slevin, Jr., Francis Eugene Slevin and John Carl Slevin, Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Slevin of the home; one daughter, April L. Very sorry for your loss.
Love and prayers for everyone. Bill was a sweet, friendly man of God.
I always enjoyed chatting with Bill in front of his house when I was working in my yard. He and Linda have always been very friendly. Linda, I’m so sorry for your loss. Praying his family will have God’s peace and strength during this sad time.
I have very special childhood memories in the Slevin household. All the love and laughter can never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are for the whole family during this time.
It was a struggle trying to cope with the news. It wasnt easy.
